FINDING LICHEN IN WINTER LANDSCAPE

By Bob Danley

March 3, 2021

Looking grim... everything snow covered? Not really...

Check the wooden gate posts you walk past. And then immediately note...

Conifer tree trunks, never snow covered, substrate for many lichen species...

Home for lichen also applies to deciduous tree trunks...

Branches and twigs at all heights of the tree also included...

Mammal tracks can also direct you to brush and shrubs laden with lichen...

Large boulders are a good source for finding and photographing lichen, nice vertical surfaces...

Smaller dark-colored rocks emerge from shallow snow and provide horizontal surface for photographing lichen...

Slopes with a south-facing aspect will have areas of exposed soil from solar radiation...

Steep embankments along trails will have exposed lichen species...

Your search will yield some pretty awesome aesthetics too...

Opportunity awaits, take the challenge and you will be rewarded
